A massive fire broke out at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday afternoon, forcing authorities to suspend all flights and halt air traffic. The blaze was so severe that it blanketed the airport’s cargo village area in thick clouds of smoke.
A video released by PTI clearly showed how flames were engulfing the cargo village area. Airport officials said the fire broke out in the cargo area around 2:15 p.m., the Dhaka Tribune reported.
Due to the fire at Dhaka airport, several flights have been cancelled or rerouted. The incident has directly affected flights to and from the airport. Airport emergency units, along with the Bangladesh Army and Air Force, have launched a firefighting operation. To avoid any untoward incident, several flights have been diverted to other airports in nearby cities.
The Bangladesh Army and Air Force worked in conjunction with the airport’s emergency units to extinguish the fire. Officials stated that the situation is being continuously monitored and specialized equipment is being used to reduce the intensity of the fire.
The incident has also affected flights to Mumbai and Delhi. Several Mumbai-bound flights are stranded on taxiways. According to reports, an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Dhaka has been diverted to Kolkata. At present, there is no official information on when flight operations will return to normal.
