Bangladesh: Second arrest warrant issued against ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Dhaka: The International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Monday issued arrest warrants against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 others. Those against whom the ICT has issued warrants include a former army general and a former police chief. These people have been prosecuted for their alleged role in incidents of forced disappearances. This is the second arrest warrant issued by the ICT against Hasina.

Warrant issued after hearing

Hasina took refuge in India after anti-government protests and the fall of the Awami League government in August last year. The tribunal has so far registered three cases against Hasina. An ICT official said, “Tribunal Chairman Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtuza Majumdar issued this arrest warrant after hearing the prosecution’s petition.” The Inspector General of Police was ordered to arrest twelve people, including Hasina, and present them before the tribunal on February 12.

Sheikh Hasina accused of embezzlement

Recently, an anti-corruption committee in Bangladesh has launched an investigation against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family in connection with allegations of embezzlement of five billion US dollars at the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant. Indian companies are involved in the construction of the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh. It is being constructed by the Russian state-owned Rosatom company. Ruppur, the first Bangladeshi nuclear power plant designed by Russia, is being built 160 km west of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.

Relations not normal between India and Bangladesh

Meanwhile, let us also tell you here that relations between India and Bangladesh have deteriorated since Hasina stepped down from power and Mohammad Yunus became the country’s chief advisor, especially due to increasing attacks on Hindu minorities. The interim government of Bangladesh has promised to extradite Hasina and has also sent a diplomatic note to India on the matter. Hasina has been living in a safe haven in India since August.
