Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau resigned on Monday after a long protest. Trudeau was being opposed due to rising inflation, lack of jobs and recession in Canada. Many leaders of the Liberal Party also wanted Trudeau to resign so that the party could get a new face for the post of Prime Minister in the 2025 elections.

The Canadian Parliament has been suspended till March 24, the party will have to choose its new leader before March 24. The National Executive, which controls the leadership issues of the Liberal Party, is scheduled to meet this week, possibly after the caucus.

Who will be the new leader of the Liberals?

Potential leaders include former Bank of England and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie and former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. It is hoped that a new party leader can pull the Liberals out of their despair before the general election to be held on or before October 20.

In recent surveys, Trudeau’s Liberal Party is lagging behind the opposition Conservative Party, which is led by the flamboyant Pierre Poilievre. People associated with the party believe that only a new leader can bring the lagging party forward.

Trudeau expressed regret about this?

Trudeau said that he regrets that he failed to reform Canada’s election process before the general election to be held this year. He said, “If I have one regret, especially when we are close to this election – it is that we could not change the way we choose our governments in this country so that people can choose their second choice or third choice on the same ballot paper.”

What did Trudeau say while resigning?

Trudeau said on Monday, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles, then I cannot be the best choice in that election.”

Trudeau has been elected PM of Canada for two terms, most recently in 2021, he managed to stay in power but his party lost the majority. Since then Poilievre’s Conservative Party has taken a lead of more than 20 percent over the Liberal Party in the national polling average. Trudeau told reporters on Monday that Poilievre’s conservative thinking is not right for Canadians.
