Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has said that the TDP is seriously considering a proposal to allow only those with more than two children to contest panchayat and municipal elections. He has indicated that those who have less than 2 children will not be allowed to contest local elections.
CM Chandrababu Naidu made this statement while speaking to reporters during a visit to his hometown Naravaripalli near Tirupati. He made this statement a few months after the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly repealed a 30-year-old law that barred people with more than two children from contesting local bodies and civic bodies elections.
Chandrababu Naidu said that if you do not have children, you are not eligible to contest local body elections. We are considering bringing a law under which only those with two children will be able to contest local body elections. In the past, we had made a law under which if you have more than two children, you are not eligible to contest elections.
Municipal elections will not be held if you do not have children
He said that now we are considering bringing a law under which if you have at least two children, you will not be able to contest elections. If you have more than five children, you were not given ration earlier. At present, we are considering increasing government assistance on the basis of population and family structure. We will provide security to such families.
Chandrababu Naidu has proposed a controversial policy linking the number of children to their eligibility to contest local body elections. He suggested that persons with less than two children should be barred from contesting for the post of Sarpanch, Municipal Councilor or Mayor. He indicated that this would stop the declining fertility rate in Andhra Pradesh.
Ban on contesting elections if there are more than two children, law made
In November last year, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a bill to amend the AP Panchayat Raj and AP Municipality Act to ban people with more than two children from contesting local body elections.
CM Chandrababu Naidu said that your parents raised four-five children. You have limited it to one. Even the most intelligent people today are adopting a dual income, childless lifestyle. If their parents had thought the same, they would not have existed today. He stressed that countries like Japan and South Korea are already struggling with increasing population and declining birth rate.
This is not the first time that Chandrababu Naidu has made a statement about population. In October last year, Chandrababu Naidu had made similar comments about bringing a law to allow only people with two or more children to contest local body elections.
