Supreme Court asks Centre to pay attention to the issue of untreated solid waste, reprimands MCD, don’t force us to issue some harsh directions

The Supreme Court reprimanded the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for not disposing of more than 3,000 tonnes of solid waste daily in the country’s capital Delhi. Expressing displeasure, the court said on Friday that this is happening openly in Delhi. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan cited an affidavit of the MCD, which said that untreated solid waste in Delhi would be cleared by December 2027.

The MCD lawyer said that the garbage is taken to landfill sites in Bhalswa and Ghazipur. The Supreme Court said that this cannot continue in Delhi. Senior advocate Aparajita Singh, who is assisting the court as amicus curiae, said that the problem is that the Delhi government and the Center are not working in harmony on this issue. On this, the court asked the Center to pay attention to this issue. She said that we will sit them together. The court said, do not force us to issue some strict instructions. Such issues have to be dealt with strictly.
