Bangladesh: The troubles of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are not decreasing. Meanwhile, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has also banned Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League from contesting elections.

A key adviser to Muhammad Yunus’ interim government announced that Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League will not be allowed to participate in future elections.

Announcement made during rally

Mahfuz Alam, a prominent leader of the anti-discrimination movement, announced at a rally in Chandpur district, “Elections will be contested only between pro-Bangladesh groups.” He said, “Only Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami and other pro-Bangladesh groups will continue their political activities in the country.” It is worth noting that Mahfuz Alam played an important role in the protests against Sheikh Hasina’s government.

BNP opposed

The BNP has opposed the ban on any political party, indicating a balanced stance on the political future of the Awami League. The party called for elections as soon as possible after minimal reforms.

BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir recently warned that the interim government should not prolong its reforms, as otherwise it could take a decade. He said, “An unelected government should not last long.”

This is what Mohammad Yunus said about the elections

Last month, Yunus said that the next general election in the country could be held in late 2025 or the first half of 2026. However, he had said that the timing of the elections would largely depend on political consensus and the extent of reforms to be carried out before that.
