A case of abuse and torture of mentally ill patients has come to light in ‘Samartha’ Ashram located in Netaji Nagar of Sambalpur district of Odisha. In a viral video, it was seen that a mentally weak and old woman was being brutally beaten and treated inhumanly.
Instances of beating and torturing mentally ill patients by the staff of the ashram were seen in the video. After this video went viral, the local administration and police were shocked and they immediately started investigating the matter.

After getting information about the case, Sambalpur police immediately raided the ashram. During the raid, the police took stock of the condition of the mentally ill living there. An officer of Sambalpur Police said, “There was news of ill-treatment of mentally challenged people in Samarth Ashram. We immediately reached the ashram and started investigating the matter. On the basis of the video, we will take strict legal action against the culprits.”
