Sri Lankan Navy opened fire on Indian fishermen, five fishermen injured, India strongly protested the incident, warned Sri Lanka ‘not acceptable under any circumstances’

New Delhi: Five Indian fishermen were injured in firing by the Sri Lankan Navy near Delft Island on Tuesday morning. India has reacted strongly to this incident. Sri Lanka’s Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was lodged. In its response, India said that the use of force is not ‘acceptable’ under any circumstances.

Navy opened fire on fishermen

The ministry said, “The Sri Lankan Navy opened fire while apprehending 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island. Two of the 13 fishermen on board the fishing boat have sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.” It said that three other fishermen suffered minor injuries and have been treated. Officials of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna met the injured fishermen at the hospital and enquired about their well-being. All possible assistance is being provided to the fishermen and their families.

‘Consensus should be strictly followed’
The Foreign Ministry said, “The Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was lodged over the incident.” The Indian High Commission in Colombo has also raised the matter with the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry. The Indian statement said, “The Government of India has always emphasized the need to resolve issues related to fishermen in a humane manner, keeping in mind their livelihood concerns.” The Foreign Ministry said, “Use of force is not acceptable under any circumstances. The existing consensus between the two governments in this regard should be strictly followed.”
