The Border Security Force (BSF) claimed that a woman constable of Malda sector foiled a major infiltration attempt by Bangladeshi citizens near the Kutadah border outpost on Wednesday.

A group of five to six armed Bangladeshi citizens were approaching the border fence near Ardhapur in Malda district of West Bengal. During this time, a woman constable of the 88th BSF battalion single-handedly challenged them.

BSF South Bengal Frontier spokesperson and DIG NK Pandey said, “The constable displayed exemplary courage and acted without hesitation despite realizing that the Bangladeshi nationals were carrying lethal weapons. It could not be ascertained whether they were smugglers or not, but they had illegally entered Indian territory and were approaching the border fence with the intention of breaking it.

DIG Pandey said that the woman constable was on duty in the second shift when she saw the intruders moving towards the fence. She immediately warned and alerted her colleagues on the radio. Even after being warned, the Bangladeshis adopted an aggressive stance and kept moving forward.

DIG Pandey claimed that without caring about her personal safety, the brave woman constable moved towards the group.

The DIG said, “By then they had reached close to the fence. If the constable had not fired, they would have started damaging the fence. Hearing the noise and sensing their intention, the criminals took advantage of the dense fog and fled. The possibility of any miscreant getting injured in the firing cannot be ruled out.”

Regarding the performance of women constables deployed on active duty on the India-Bangladesh border, he said, “Their ability, dedication and bravery are unparalleled. They are fully capable of preventing any kind of criminal activity and keeping the country’s borders safe.”
