India-Bangladesh: Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain may meet Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar during the Indian Ocean Conference to be held in Muscat, the capital of Oman, next week. Bangladesh may use this meeting to convey a message aimed at preventing further tensions in bilateral relations between the two countries.
The 8th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC 2025) is scheduled to be held in Muscat on 16-17 February. Last month, the Indian Foreign Minister invited the Bangladesh Foreign Advisor to attend the conference. If the planned meeting between Tauheed Hussain and S Jaishankar takes place, it will be their second dialogue in five months.
Last meeting was held in September
Tauheed Hussain and S Jaishankar first met in New York in September last year during the United Nations General Assembly session. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government fell on 5 August due to massive uprisings of students and the public in Bangladesh. In this changed context, their discussions in New York focused on taking forward bilateral relations on issues of mutual interest.
Indian Foreign Secretary also visited
After the New York talks, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka in December last year. During his visit, he met Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jasim Uddin.
During this time, he also met Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus, Foreign Advisor Tauheed Hussain and Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman. At that time, both the countries were discussing to normalize relations and reduce the tension after August. Sheikh Hasina is also in India since the coup in Bangladesh. Due to this also, relations between the two are not going well. Bangladesh has demanded to send her back several times.
