Delhi: After a spectacular victory in the recent assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is eyeing the post of mayor to form a ‘triple engine government’ in Delhi. Mayoral elections are to be held in April. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the mayoral election held in November last year by three votes.
BJP leaders said on Wednesday, February 12, that the party can easily get its councilor elected as mayor. A senior leader of the BJP’s Delhi unit said, “BJP, which won 48 seats in the recently held assembly elections, will have 10 out of 14 nominated members in the Delhi Municipal Corporation while AAP will have four. Apart from this, many councilors of AAP are ready to join BJP for the development of their wards under the new government.”
How many councilors of BJP and AAP became MLAs?
According to officials, three out of 121 councilors of AAP in the Municipal Corporation won the assembly elections, while eight out of 120 councilors of BJP were elected to the House. In the 2022 municipal elections, AAP had won 134 wards, BJP 104, Congress nine and independent candidates won three wards. According to BJP leaders, the mayoral election will provide the party with an opportunity to form a “triple engine government” to serve the people of Delhi.
Many AAP councillors have contacted us – BJP
Another senior leader said that with seven MPs from Delhi, the expectation of AAP councillors switching sides and eight MLAs being appointed as nominated members, it is clear that the party will win the mayor’s post. He said, “Many AAP councillors have contacted us, but we have not given them any assurance yet. Many AAP councillors voted for the BJP candidate in the mayoral election held in November.”
BJP wins 48 seats in Delhi Assembly elections
Let us tell you that BJP has come to power in Delhi after almost 27 years. In the elections held on 5 February for 70 seats of Delhi Assembly, it won 48 seats. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party won only 22 seats while Congress again did not get any seat.
