The petition seeking cancellation of Indian citizenship of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was heard in Allahabad High Court on Wednesday. Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition seeking cancellation of the citizenship of the Congress leader. In the petition filed in the court, a demand has been made to direct the Home Ministry to cancel Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship.

During the hearing in the High Court, Subramanian Swamy said, ‘The Government of India had issued a show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi seeking clarification about his British citizenship. But Rahul Gandhi has not yet responded to it. At the same time, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the central government said that the court does not stop the jurisdiction to hear this case. Now the court will hear the case next on March 26.

Swamy had filed a copy of the petition

The lawyer appearing on behalf of the central government said that the case pending in the Allahabad High Court does not stop the jurisdiction of this court to hear this case. Parallel proceedings can be done in both the courts on this matter. At the same time, a petition to declare Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship illegal is also pending in the Delhi High Court. On October 9 last year, the court had given Subramanian Swamy time to file a copy of the petition pending in the Allahabad High Court on this issue.

What is Subramanian Swamy’s complaint?

Former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy had said in his complaint that Rahul Gandhi has been the director and secretary of a company named Backops Limited registered in Britain. In the company’s annual returns from 2005 to 2006, Rahul Gandhi’s nationality is British. Also, his date of birth is mentioned as 19 June 1970. On Subramanian’s complaint, the Home Ministry had issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi in April last year and asked him to respond within 15 days.
