Pakistan: Once again making its stance clear on Afghan refugees, the Afghan embassy condemned Pakistan’s plans and said that Afghan nationals have been arrested in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Islamabad: Pakistan has rejected allegations of mistreatment of Afghan refugees and underlined the country’s role in settling millions of Afghan citizens over the decades. Foreign Office spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan has also issued a statement in response to the comments of Afghanistan’s acting embassy in-charge Sardar Shakeib. Shakeib had alleged that Afghan refugees in Pakistan are being arrested without warning.

Shakeib has also alleged that the Pakistan government wants to expel all Afghans, even those who have documents to live there. He stressed that recently Afghan citizens were arrested and searched in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the police ordered Afghan refugees to leave both the cities and move to other parts of the country.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that Pakistan has taken note of the statements of the Charge d’Affaires of the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad about the plan to deport illegal foreigners. Earlier, the Afghan Embassy had warned that Pakistan wants to expel all Afghan refugees from the country and their expulsion is expected soon. The embassy issued a strongly worded statement about Pakistan’s plans, saying that Afghan citizens are being arrested, searched and police are ordering them to leave these cities and go to other parts of Pakistan.

Let us tell you that, apart from millions of people living illegally in Pakistan, about 14.5 lakh Afghan citizens are registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) as refugees.
