Jaipur: The political heat in Rajasthan is now taking a different form. The protest of Congress MLAs is continuing and they spent the night in the House. These MLAs continued their protest in the House against the suspension of six MLAs of the party after protesting in the House against the comment of a minister about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and spent Friday night there. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Julie said that three ministers talked to senior Congress MLAs on Friday night but the talks remained inconclusive and the protest continued.
Minister should withdraw his comment – Congress
Julie said, “We demand that the minister should withdraw his comment. There are examples when words have been removed from the proceedings of the House, but the government itself does not want to run the House and hence it has been made an issue.” He said that the party MLAs have been protesting in the House since the proposal to suspend six MLAs from the House was passed on Friday.
Indira Gandhi was commented upon
It is noteworthy that there was a huge uproar in the Rajasthan Assembly on Friday when the state’s Social Justice Minister Avinash Gehlot used an “inappropriate” word in reference to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. While answering a question regarding hostel for working women during the Question Hour, pointing towards the opposition, the minister had said, “In the 2023-24 budget also, like every time, you named this scheme after your ‘grandmother’ Indira Gandhi.” After this, the proceedings of the House had to be adjourned thrice amid the uproar and sloganeering of Congress MLAs.
6 Congress MLAs suspended
A proposal to suspend six party MLAs, including Congress state unit president Govind Singh Dotasara, for the remaining period of the budget session for “indecent and reprehensible conduct” in the House was passed in the evening. Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani announced the passing of a proposal to this effect moved by Government Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg. After this, the proceedings of the House were adjourned till February 24 and the Congress MLAs sat on a dharna in the House. According to the Congress spokesperson, “A protest will be held at all the district headquarters on February 22 against the insult of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by a minister of the BJP government and the suspension of six MLAs including Congress state unit president Govind Singh Dotasara.”
