Gujarat Municipal Elections: Recently, civic elections were held in Gujarat in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide victory. The results that came on February 18 made one thing clear that the opposition needs to work very hard to defeat the saffron party in BJP’s stronghold Gujarat. The BJP won the elections by winning 1,608 out of 2,171 seats in municipalities, municipal corporations as well as district and taluka panchayats.
One aspect of these results also came to light that there has been a record increase in the victory of Muslim candidates on BJP tickets in 66 municipalities. Along with this, BJP has also made its presence felt in those districts where there are a large number of voters from the minority community.
Increase in victory of Muslim candidates in 2025 compared to 2018
When elections were held in these municipalities for the last time in 2018, 46 Muslim candidates won on BJP tickets. This year this number has increased to 76. This also includes 33 women. The party had fielded 103 Muslim candidates. Not only this, many candidates have won from municipalities of Patan, Kheda, Panchmahal and Junagadh districts, where no Muslim BJP candidate had won last time.
In 2018, 252 Muslim candidates were elected in municipalities, which has now increased to 275. In this, the share of Congress is 39 percent, BJP 28 percent and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is at 4.7 percent. 13 Muslim candidates of AAP have won, including Jamnagar’s Salaya Municipality, from where 11 candidates won.
Congress also suffered a big setback
In the state, Congress had won 632 out of 2064 municipal seats in 2018, but its number came down to 252. Apart from this, the number of Muslim winners has also come down from 133 to 109. Regarding this, Imran Khedawala, the only Muslim MLA in the Gujarat Assembly, claimed, “Many of our (Muslim) candidates did not contest the elections on the Congress symbol and won as independents. Their priority is to get work done in their areas.”
At the same time, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM also fielded candidates in these elections, but the party could win only one seat in Upleta Taluka Panchayat of Rajkot district.
