Washington: Tensions between China and Taiwan continue. After Donald Trump became the US President, people had a question in their minds that what direction would the relationship between the two countries take now. But, now President Trump has clarified his stand on this. The US President refused to say during his first cabinet meeting whether his administration would take any steps to prevent China from occupying Taiwan by force.
What did Trump say?
According to a CNN report, Trump told reporters during his first cabinet meeting, “I never comment on this, I don’t comment on anything, because I never want to put myself in that position.” According to CNN, Trump said, “We are going to have a good relationship with China, but they will not be able to take advantage of us.”
America had given indications
According to CNN, Trump’s remarks came when recently the US took a big step regarding Taiwan. The US State Department earlier this month removed a line from its website stating that the US does not support Taiwan’s independence. This stance signals that the US has changed its stance and recognises the Chinese policy known as One China Policy. It also accepts Beijing’s position that Taiwan is part of China. However, the US has never accepted the Chinese Communist Party’s claim of sovereignty over the island.
China had accused the US
The Chinese military had accused the US of risky behaviour in the Taiwan Strait on February 12 when two US naval ships crossed the international waterway. “The US action sends the wrong signals and increases security risks,” the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command said in a statement on Wednesday. (ANI)
