Ganga River Water Is Not Pure: In most places in Bihar, the water of the Ganga river is not even suitable for bathing. Giving this information in the Bihar Economic Survey 2024-25, it has been said that this is due to the presence of high number of bacteria (high value of bacterial population) in Ganga water per unit.

What did the report say according to the economic survey

Officials said that the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) monitors the quality of Ganga water at 34 places in the state every fortnight. According to the economic survey recently presented in the state assembly, the presence of high number of bacteria (total amount of coliform and fecal coliform) in the water of Ganga indicates the presence of.

This is mainly due to the flow of sewage, domestic waste into the Ganga water from the cities located on the banks of Ganga and its tributaries. The survey cited the latest water quality test results of BSPCB. It said, “Other parameters pH (acidity or alkalinity), dissolved oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) have been observed within the prescribed limits in the river and its tributaries in Bihar, indicating that the water is suitable for aquatic life, breeding of wildlife, fisheries and irrigation.”

Important cities located on the banks of the river include Buxar, Chapra (Saran), Dighwara, Sonpur, Maner, Danapur, Patna, Fatuha, Bakhtiyarpur, Barh, Mokama, Begusarai, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Manihari, Munger, Jamalpur, Sultanganj, Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon. Reacting to the report, BSPCB Chairman DK Shukla told PTI-Bhasha that the high number of bacteria in the Ganga river is a matter of concern.

Shukla said, “‘Fecal coliform’ bacteria are found in excreta, which contaminates water through untreated sewage. Its level The higher it is, the greater the presence of disease-causing microbes in the water. As per CPCB standards, the permissible limit of fecal coliform is 2,500 MPN per 100 ml.”

He said the presence of total coliform and fecal coliform in the Ganga is very high at most places, indicating that it is not suitable for bathing. The senior official said the BSPCB is taking steps to ensure that sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the state function properly. Shukla said we have directed the concerned officials to ensure that the construction work on some STPs in the state is completed as soon as possible.

The survey said, “The BSPCB is also monitoring the quality of sewage, effluents generated from industrial units as well as STPs, sewerage drains. Currently, 2,561 water, waste, sewage samples have been collected from various sources by the board.”

According to BSPCB data, these ghats are included
