The incident took place between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm on January 18, 2022.. when the warship was at dock. 3 sailors were killed
Three years after the deadly explosion on INS Ranvir, the Colaba police have registered a case of negligence against a private gas company. 3 sailors were killed and 11 others were injured in the blast on January 18, 2022. According to information received from police sources, the Indian Navy has conducted a detailed investigation of the incident and based on their report, Lieutenant Commander Sachin Kumar has lodged an FIR at the Colaba Police Station in Mumbai. Since the case has been registered against the people of the private gas company, the police may call the officials associated with the company for questioning in this matter later.
Why did the explosion happen?
It is being told that the explosion occurred due to a malfunction in the air-conditioning compartment of the warship weighing about 4,000 tonnes, which was probably caused by the leakage of freon gas. The crew members were seriously injured due to that explosion, who were immediately admitted to INHS Ashwini Hospital in Colaba for treatment. At the time of the explosion, there were about 300 naval personnel on board the ship.
Wrong gas was provided
After the incident, a Board of Inquiry was constituted to investigate the cause of the explosion and samples of the AC unit were sent to the Centre for Fire, Explosive, and Environmental Safety (CFEES), DRDO, New Delhi, as well as IIT Bombay for examination. The FIR states that the explosion occurred because the gas supplier had provided the wrong type of gas, which caused problems in the unit and led to the blast. Actually, Freon R 22 gas was to be used in the unit… but the company supplied Freon R152a instead, traces of which were found during investigation.

At present, the investigation of this case is still going on, and in the coming days, police officers can also interrogate the officials of the private company. Based on the complaint by the Navy officer, a case has been registered at the Colaba Police Station under sections 1860, 304 A and 437 of the Indian Penal Code.
