Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday promised that if his party comes to power, toddy tappers will be exempted from the ambit of the stringent liquor ban law brought in by the Nitish Kumar government. The former deputy chief minister made the announcement while addressing reporters here and claimed that the move will provide relief to the “poor people, especially Dalits, who are facing hardships due to the stringent provisions of the excise law”.

The sale and consumption of liquor was completely banned in the state in April 2016. Yadav claimed that the law was brought in this form due to the chief minister’s dogmatism.

CM is no longer physically and mentally fit: Tejashwi
The Leader of Opposition in the state assembly alleged that the chief minister is no longer physically and mentally fit to rule the state. Recalling the reign of his father and RJD president Lalu Prasad, Yadav said, “He (Lalu Yadav) had exempted taxes on the sale of toddy. This brought relief to the poorest section of the population. We will do the same if we come to power. Besides, we will bring toddy extraction out of the ambit of prohibition.”

‘Will launch de-addiction campaign if voted to power’
Tejashwi justified the announcement saying, “We are not in favour of promoting consumption of any kind of intoxicants. In fact, if voted to power, we will launch de-addiction campaign which is the only effective remedy to the social evil.” “We are also sensitive to the fact that the big mafia involved in the illicit liquor trade are out of the reach while the poor have to bear the brunt. We want to correct this anomaly,” he added.

Announcement to implement ‘100 per cent domicile policy’
Yadav also reiterated his promises made at the ‘Yuva Panchayat’ held here a day earlier and announced to protect the interests of Bihar’s young population by bringing in a ‘100 per cent domicile policy’ if voted to power. Besides this, he said that after coming to power, his government will waive the form fee for competitive exams and will bear the travel expenses of the candidates.
