Hampi Gangrape Case: Karnataka government minister Shivraj Tangadagi said on Sunday March 9, 2025 that the third accused in the tourist rape case in Koppal district has been arrested. Police had said on Saturday that two women, including a 27-year-old Israeli female tourist, were allegedly gang-raped and assaulted on Thursday night on the banks of Sanapur Lake near Hampi.
Third accused arrested
The Karnataka government minister said that three persons were involved in the crime, two of whom were arrested on March 8, while the third accused was arrested on Sunday. Tangadagi, the minister in charge of Koppal district, said, “Three people were involved in this heinous crime. This should never have happened. Two accused were arrested yesterday and the third was arrested today (Sunday).” Tangadagi said that he has directed the police to increase the security of tourists to prevent such incidents in future.
Fled to Tamil Nadu after committing the crime
According to the police, the third accused was arrested in Tamil Nadu, where he had fled after the crime. Police said that the incident took place around 11 pm on Thursday night when after dinner, the homestay operator, a 29-year-old woman, an Israeli citizen and three male tourists were enjoying music while playing guitar while sitting on the banks of the Tungabhadra canal near Sanapur Lake.
The accused on the bike started demanding money
It told that one of the male tourists was from America, while the others were residents of Odisha and Maharashtra. According to the police, in his complaint, the homestay operator alleged that while they were listening to music, three people on a motorcycle came to them and asked where they would get petrol, when he told them that there was no petrol pump nearby, the accused demanded Rs 100.
The complainant said in the FIR, “I did not know them, so I told them that I did not have money and when the men repeatedly insisted, one of the male tourists from Odisha gave them Rs 20. After this, the three men allegedly started arguing and threatened to hit their heads with stones.”
Rape of Israeli tourist
A senior police officer said that when the woman and the tourists refused to give them money, the Kannada and Telugu speaking accused misbehaved with them. The officer said that after this they pushed the three male tourists into the canal. After this, the woman and the Israeli tourist were allegedly raped.
