After coming back to power in the US, while on the one hand Trump is sending back illegal immigrants, on the other hand he has also announced to impose heavy tariffs on India. At the same time, the atmosphere between the United States and India has once again heated up over the purchase of Russian weapons.

US Commerce Minister Howard Lutnick asked India to stop buying weapons from Russia. Howard said, “It is very important to ban Russian weapons to strengthen the relationship between India and America.” Earlier, during PM Modi’s US visit, President Donald Trump offered him to buy F-35 fighter jets. While American leaders are constantly pressuring India regarding Russian weapons, now an American report has revealed India’s dependence on Russian weapons. This report said that India’s military power depends on Russian weapons. It cannot fight without it.

US Commerce Minister gave a statement

United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a TV program, “India has historically purchased Russian weapons on a large scale and we understand that this has to stop.” He emphasized that the US is ready to give India American defense systems as an alternative to Russian weapons. Since 2008, India has purchased weapons worth $20 billion from the US.

India is the largest buyer of Russian weapons

A government research report in the US Congress in the year 2021 revealed that the Indian Army cannot fight effectively without Russian weapons. The CRS had said in its report that many analysts in India and the world believe that India’s dependence on Russian weapons will continue for many years to come. It further said, “Russia is ready to give India those weapons and technologies which it does not give to any other country in the world. Apart from this, Russia also provides military weapons to India at very affordable rates.”
