Tejasvi Surya marries Shivashree today as per Vedic traditions with blessings of gurus, elders and well-wishers, guests at reception urged not to bring two gifts

Bengaluru South Lok Sabha MP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national president Tejasvi Surya and Karnataka classical music singer Shivashree Skandaprasad tied the knot on Thursday. The wedding was performed in a traditional manner amid Vedic chanting. Top BJP leaders, including party state unit president BY Vijayendra, Union ministers V Somanna and Arjunram Meghwal, as well as several party MPs and MLAs attended the ceremony. Top leaders also blessed Tejashwi and Shivashree.

Shivashree has done graduation in bio-engineering and post graduation from Chennai Sanskrit College. She is also a Bharatanatyam dancer. Recently, 34-year-old MP Tejashwi and Shivashree were seen seeking blessings from spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar at his ashram. 34-year-old Tejasvi Surya later posted on ‘X’, “With the blessings of gurus, elders and well-wishers, married Shivashree today according to Vedic traditions. We seek your blessings and best wishes as we begin this journey together.”

Video posted before reception

He also posted a video in Kannada with a request message in which he urged guests attending the reception not to bring flowers, bouquets or dry fruits as gifts. He said 85 per cent of wedding flowers and bouquets are thrown away within 24 hours of the event and 300,000 kg of dry fruits are left over at weddings every year. The BJP MP said, “The potential donation value of such bouquets and dry fruits is Rs 315 crore annually.” He requested guests not to bring flowers or dry fruits to the ceremony.

‘Flower bouquets are not national waste’

At the same time, the South India Floriculture Association has urged BJP MP Tejasvi Surya to withdraw his recent statement calling flower bouquets “national waste”. Surya, while inviting the public for his wedding ceremony on March 10, had requested people to refrain from giving bouquets of flowers in Facebook and YouTube live sessions, calling it a “national waste”.

Flowers cultivated in 38 thousand hectares in Karnataka

South India Floriculture Association president T M Arvind said such comments coming from a responsible leader were “inappropriate” and “undermine the hard work of lakhs of farmers who depend on floriculture for their livelihood.” According to Arvind, flowers are cultivated in 38,000 hectares in Karnataka, of which commercial flowers are cultivated in more than 1,500 hectares. He said, “This sector provides employment to 11 lakh people directly and indirectly, while more than 52 lakh people are benefited by floriculture in 2.8 lakh acres.”

Arvind underlined that Chikkaballapura BJP MP K. Sudhakar had recently said in Parliament that flowers were cultivated on 25,000 acres of land in the Chikballapur area and proposed setting up of a floriculture board to support the industry.
