Congress has suffered a major setback in Maharashtra. Former Pune MLA Ravindra Dhangekar has joined Shiv Sena. He took membership of the party in the presence of Eknath Shinde. There was speculation about Dhangekar leaving the Congress for several months. He won the Kasba assembly by-election in 2023, but lost to BJP’s Muralidhar Mohol in the Lok Sabha elections. After this, in the 2024 assembly elections, he lost from the Kasba seat against BJP’s Hemant Rasne, whom he had defeated in the by-election a year ago. On Monday afternoon, he announced his decision to leave the Congress and by evening he joined the Shiv Sena.
After leaving the Congress, Dhangekar had told reporters that he would meet Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday evening and then take a final decision on joining the Shiv Sena. He had said, “It is sad to leave Congress. Everyone worked hard for me in the elections, but the sentiments of my supporters and voters are that I should take a decision that will lead to development work in the (Kasba) area.” Uday Samant made a place in Shiv Sena
Dhangekar told that recently he had met Shinde and Shiv Sena minister Uday Samant, who offered him to work together. He had said, “After discussion with my supporters and voters, it was decided that we should work with Shinde. I will meet him today and then take a decision.”
Poor performance in elections and internal strife became the reason
Many leaders of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharad Pawar) included in the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra are leaving the party and joining the parties BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP (Ajit Pawar) included in the Mahayuti. Political experts believe that the leaders who stay in the Maha Vikas Aghadi are not going to get anything for the next four-five years. Along with this, there is also internal strife in all the parties involved in the alliance. This is the reason why leaders are changing sides. The leaders who want immediate benefits are joining Shiv Sena and the leaders who want benefits in the long run are joining BJP.
