West Bengal Internet Shutdown: Internet has been suspended in some areas of the city after a violent clash between two groups in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The state government has also deployed a large contingent of security forces here to maintain law and order. According to the police, on Holi, Friday, March 14, 2025, a fight broke out between two groups in Sainthia, Birbhum due to some altercation.
Internet shut down in these areas till March 17
According to officials, internet has been suspended in at least five gram panchayat areas to prevent the spread of rumors and illegal activities. The ban on internet services will be effective from March 14 to March 17. Police force has been deployed in the affected areas after reports of stone pelting incident in Birbhum.
According to the government order, messages will not be broadcast temporarily in the interest of maintaining public order and preventing incitement to any crime. The areas in Birbhum district where internet has been banned include Sainthia, Hatora Gram Panchayat (GP), Mathpalasa GP, Harisara GP, Dariyapur GP and Phulur GP.
Mamata government hiding violence – BJP
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari targeted the state government over the internet shutdown and such a situation. He said that suspending the internet is proof that the administration has failed to deal with the situation. The BJP leader posted on Instagram and wrote, “The West Bengal government is trying its best to hide incidents of communal violence to save its credibility. I urge the Home Ministry and His Excellency the Governor of Bengal to seek a report from the Chief Secretary of West Bengal regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.”
Clashes took place at many places in Bengal – BJP claims
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that incidents of clashes have taken place not only in Birbhum but also in Tamluk, Nandakumar and other areas across the state. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar also targeted the Mamata Banerjee-led state government over the alleged clash in Birbhum. He alleged that the state police has become inactive.
