Telangana OBC Reservation: The Telangana government has made a big announcement for the OBC community. State Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced 42% reservation in education, jobs and political representation for the OBC community. Till now it was 23%, which will now be almost doubled.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, while releasing the results of the caste census, said that the population of backward classes (OBC) in Telangana is 56.36%. He said that this decision has been taken on the basis of scientific and legal process. Revanth Reddy wrote on social media X, “The population of OBC in Telangana is 56.36%. Now we will ensure 42% reservation for this group in education, jobs and political representation.”
Bill introduced to implement 42% quota
The Telangana government has introduced two bills to implement 42% reservation. This reservation will be given in education, government jobs and local body elections. OBC quota will also be increased from 23% to 42% in rural and urban local bodies.
Congress’s election promise and impact at the national level
Before the 2023 assembly elections, the Congress had issued a ‘BC Declaration’, in which this promise was made. At the national level, Rahul Gandhi had promised to conduct a caste-based census if the Congress government is formed at the Center.
BJP’s opposition
The BJP criticized the Congress, saying that it is trying to create division in the society on the basis of caste. The BJP believes that there is a greater need to give priority to employment and development than reservation.
Let us tell you that this was part of the Congress’ election promise, which is now being fulfilled. Now in Telangana, a decision was taken to reserve 42% on the basis of OBC population being 56.36%. Reservation will be implemented in education, government jobs and local bodies. At the same time, the BJP criticized this move and called it the politics of dividing the society.
