West Bengal: Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari demands a ban on future foreign trips of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following statements made during her recent UK visit

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Friday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar urging him not to allow Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to travel abroad in the future. Suvendu Adhikari accused Mamata Banerjee of undermining India on the international stage and embarrassing the country during her recent visit to the United Kingdom.

In his letter, Suvendu Adhikari claimed that Mamata Banerjee’s remarks in London display “devotion and admiration for the colonial masters”, which he described as “unthinkable” for a Bengali.

He cited her speech at a business event in the UK, where she said, “I love the UK because we have emotional ties, historical ties… from a heritage point of view, ours and yours too. 190 years, you ruled in India. You ruled Bengal… so did we forget it? India always remembers you, and Bengal also remembers you.” Shubhendu Adhikari wrote a letter to the Foreign Minister

Suvendu Adhikari condemned her remarks, saying Bengal was at the forefront of the freedom movement, which opposed British rule. He said praising the colonial past is a “public renunciation of the sacrifices made by the revolutionaries of our freedom movement”.

The letter also criticised Mamata Banerjee for her statements made at Oxford University’s Kellogg College, where she appeared to “underestimate” India’s economic growth.

When a speaker highlighted that India has overtaken Britain as the world’s fifth-largest economy and is projected to become the largest economy by 2060, Mamata Banerjee disagreed and said, “I disagree with this.

Uproar over Mamata’s statement

Suvendu Adhikari called her reaction “simply treason” and “an embarrassment to every Bengali and Indian”. He alleged that Mamata Banerjee has “deliberately tarnished India’s reputation on foreign soil” and accused her of opposing the country’s economic growth.

The sound of progress in the world is ringing in the tune of renaissance. Will the light of coming development shine on the clouds? Mamata Banerjee has no connection to the Bengali language

The BJP leader urged the Ministry of External Affairs to “thoroughly investigate” his comments and ensure that he is not allowed official foreign visits in future.

She cited existing guidelines under which the Ministry of External Affairs has to approve such visits and suggested that his comments should be considered grounds for disqualification.

Protests during Mamata’s UK visit

Mamata Banerjee’s UK visit was marred by controversies as she faced a protest from a group of protesters at Kellogg College. The protesters were holding posters questioning her stand on election violence in West Bengal and the RG Kar College case. BJP leader Amit Malviya shared a video of the incident, criticising Banerjee’s comments on India’s economic future.

“West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has a problem with India becoming the world’s largest economy… it’s really shameful,” he wrote on Instagram. However, Mamata Banerjee responded to those who created a ruckus during her speech, saying, “Please don’t do politics on this platform. You can do politics with me in my state, not here.” She defended her government over the RG Kar College case, saying, “The matter is sub-judice, also, it is with the central government, not us.”
