Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Excise Policy 2025-26 implemented, customers will get English liquor and beer from the same shop

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Excise Policy 2025-26 has come into effect from Tuesday, under which customers will get English liquor and beer from the same shop. Minister of State for Excise (Independent Charge) of Uttar Pradesh Government, Nitin Agarwal gave this information on Tuesday.

What is the whole matter?

Uttar Pradesh Excise Policy 2025-26 has come into effect. Earlier, the Excise Department said in a statement that under the new policy, joint shops are being built in place of separate shops of English and foreign liquor and beer, which will increase the retail density without increasing the number of shops.

The statement said that joint shops with an area of at least 400 square feet and fulfilling other conditions can be converted into ‘model shops’ and serve liquor to customers. According to the statement, country liquor shops have also been given the option to sell beer with certain conditions.

Low alcohol bars (serving only beer and wine) have been started in Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra and Lucknow. Bars and premium retail shops can be opened in IT and ITES establishments having an area of more than 20,000 square metres in development authorities and industrial areas.

According to the statement, ‘Event Bar License’ has been classified into different categories to prevent misuse. Several steps have been taken to promote tourism in ‘distilleries’, ‘wineries’ and ‘breweries’. In a meeting held in February under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Cabinet approved the Excise Policy for the financial year 2025-26, making several major changes including the introduction of e-lottery system for the allocation of liquor and cannabis shops.

The government has also introduced the concept of “composite shops” for the first time, merging separate beer and foreign liquor shops into one unit.
