Singapore: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has praised the Indians living here. Acknowledging the contribution of the people of the Indian community in many fields including business and industry, PM Wong said that the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) will also field people from the Indian community in the upcoming general election. During the interaction with the Indian community, PM Wong said, “You (Indian community) may be a small community, but certainly your contribution and your influence in Singapore is not small at all.”
‘Your story is the story of Singapore’
‘The Straits Times’ newspaper quoted Wong as saying, “In fact, I would say that you are already a reflection of the spirit of Singapore. Your story is the story of Singapore.” Wong praised the contribution of Indians to the country in many fields including business, industry and government in Singapore. PM Wong said that new Indian candidates will be fielded from PAP for the upcoming election. The PM neither gave much information about this nor revealed anyone’s name. Singapore
These are the big faces
Although PM Wong has not named anyone, according to media reports, the new faces seen with the leaders recently include Dinesh Basu Das, former CEO of the Agency for Integrated Care, Kawal Pal Singh, managing partner of law firm Tito Isaac & Co, Jagatheshwaran Rajo, a big face in the trade union, and Indian orthopedic surgeon Hamid Razak.
Earlier it was ignored
Earlier the People’s Action Party had ignored the Indian community in Singapore. The party had fielded 27 new faces in the 2020 general election. But, there was not a single candidate of Indian origin among these faces. After this decision of PAP in 2020, questions were also raised about the representation of the Indian community in Singapore. According to a report in a Singapore newspaper, in 2024, people of Indian origin will make up 7.6 per cent of Singapore’s population, while those of Malaysia will make up 15.1 per cent and those of China will make up 75.6 per cent.
