A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Southern California, causing rocks to fall on rural roads outside San Diego and items toppled from shelves in homes.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck southern California on Monday morning, sending rocks crashing onto rural roads outside San Diego and knocking items off shelves in homes. The tremors were strong enough to cause walls to shake, but authorities have not yet reported any injuries or major damage. The quake struck at 10.08 a.m. local time on Monday, with its epicentre in San Diego County, just 4km from Julian, according to the US Geological Survey.

The town of about 1,500 people, a hill town known for its apple pie shops, was felt as far north as Los Angeles County, about 193km away. The strong quake was followed by several milder tremors.

“I thought the single-pane windows would break,” said Paul Nelson, owner of a former gold mine that operated in the 1870s in Julian. About two dozen visitors were touring the closed mine when a small earthquake struck, but everyone stayed calm. No one was inside the old mine at the time of Monday’s quake, which shook the ground for a long time. Transportation officials warned motorists to be cautious of rocks falling down the hill and onto roads and highways, including State Route 76 northwest of Julian.

The California Department of Transportation in San Diego County said crews were assessing roads for possible damage. Schoolchildren were evacuated from buildings as a precaution when the ground began shaking, Capt. Thomas Shoots of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in San Diego County said. They got a vibration alert and then felt things rolling and bumping. “There was a lot of strong vibration and rattling around, but thankfully everything is back to normal,” he said.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department also said it had received no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Riley Ozuna, owner of Julian’s Cafe and Bakery, said some cups fell to the ground at her business. “But everything is fine.” According to Lucy Jones, a veteran seismologist in Southern California, the earthquake struck at a depth of 13.4 kilometers near the Elsinore Fault Zone, one of California’s busiest seismic zones and part of the famous San Andreas Fault System, which typically experiences at least one magnitude 4.0 earthquake each year.
