Violence in Murshidabad on April 11-12
Violence broke out in Murshidabad’s Suti, Dhuliyan and Jangipur and other areas on April 11 and 12 against the amendment in the Wakf Act, leaving at least three people dead and several others injured. Several women were allegedly molested during the violence in Dhuliyan’s Mandirpara area. The women’s commission said the violence forced hundreds of women to leave their homes, many of whom crossed the Bhagirathi river and took refuge in neighbouring Malda district. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has formed a committee to investigate the alleged harassment and displacement of women during the communal violence. At the same time, Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Murshidabad riots were pre-planned. BJP, BSF and central agencies together instigated violence. Whereas, opposition parties held Mamata Banerjee responsible for the Murshidabad violence.
