Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an important meeting with Union Home Minister, Jal Shakti Minister, Delhi Chief Minister to review the condition of Yamuna river and plans related to its revival, know the action plan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (April 17, 2025) convened and chaired an important meeting to review the status of the Yamuna river and plans related to its revival. Many senior officials including the Union Home Minister, Jal Shakti Minister, Delhi Chief Minister were present in this meeting.

The agency-wise action plans made for cleaning the Yamuna river were reviewed in detail in the meeting. These plans have been divided into three parts, short term (three months), medium term (three months to one and a half years) and long term (one and a half years to three years). Specific activities and goals have also been set for each period.

Various aspects related to cleaning the river such as drain management, solid waste management, sewage and septage management, dairy and industrial disposal, improving the flow of the river, flood area protection were discussed. Time limits have been set for all these works so that the plans can be implemented on time.

Urban River Management Plan will be made

It was also discussed in the meeting that immediate redevelopment of water infrastructure is necessary to solve the problem of leakage in the water supply system of Delhi city and unbilled water. In this direction, Delhi will make a comprehensive Urban River Management Plan, which will be linked with the Delhi Master Plan. This plan will not only help in the conservation of Yamuna, but will also improve urban water management.

Emphasis on connecting the youth with the river conservation campaign

The Prime Minister suggested that a sense of respect and attachment has to be created among the people regarding the Yamuna river. Special attention was given to connecting the youth with the river conservation campaign. He said that a comprehensive public participation movement should be started under the concept of people-river relationship, in which people should participate as volunteers in the revival of the river and the programs organized on its banks. He also said that the river is not just a source of water, but is also a center of cultural identity.

PM Modi mentioned Chhath Puja

Referring to important festivals like Chhath Puja, the Prime Minister said that the experience of celebrating Chhath Puja on the banks of Yamuna in Delhi should be comfortable and beautiful for the people. For this, it is necessary to ensure cleanliness of the river and its banks, better access and convenience.

The situation of the Yamuna area extending to Haryana and Prayagraj along with the Delhi section was also discussed in the meeting. The Prime Minister was informed about the polluted water falling into the Yamuna, the efficiency of the STP plant and the administrative problems related to it.

The Prime Minister said that real time data should be collected to monitor drains and sewage treatment plants. This data can be used in policy making and making the pollution control framework more effective. He also suggested that space technology should be used in this work, so that monitoring can be more accurate and comprehensive. In this discussion, the idea of ​​​​linking Braj Yatra with Yamuna Jan Andolan was put forward, so that people can understand the importance of the river and become partners in its conservation.
