More than 500 tourists from Pune in Maharashtra are currently in Jammu and Kashmir and efforts are being made to arrange special flights for those returning after the Pahalgam terror attack. The district administration gave this information on Wednesday evening. Girish Naikwadi, who works in an energy firm here, said that he had gone to Jammu and Kashmir with a group of 14 people but now they have decided to cut short their trip. He said, “We are not in a position to continue our trip. We want to return to Pune as soon as possible, especially because we have small children with us.”
Amritsar trip also cancelled after attack
Naikwadi said that when the attack took place, his group was in Gulmarg, about 50 km from Srinagar. He said, “We somehow reached Srinagar today. As per the initial plan, we had to go to Amritsar on April 25, but after this incident, no one in the group feels like going on the trip.”
Another tourist Harshal Pandit said that he and his family will return to Pune on Thursday. Pandit, who runs a de-addiction centre in Pune, said, “We are in Srinagar right now and the situation is tense and security is tight. We had plans to go to Pahalgam today, but after the incident we had to cancel it.”
‘Sarhad’ helping stranded tourists
Meanwhile, Pune-based NGO ‘Sarhad’, which works for the rehabilitation of Kashmiri youth, has been mobilising its resources to help the stranded tourists. “Our volunteers in Kashmir are helping the stranded tourists with accommodation and logistics,” said Sarhad founder Sanjay Nahar. Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol said 182 tourists would be brought back to Maharashtra on Thursday by special flights.
