ADR’s report on women MPs and MLAs claims that out of 513 women MLAs and MPs in the country, 28% have criminal cases registered against them, 17 women leaders are billionaires

A shocking report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has come out on the criminal and economic background of women MPs and MLAs. According to the report, out of a total of 513 women MPs/MLAs in the country, 28 percent have given information about criminal cases in their affidavits. While 17 have declared themselves as billionaires. This report has been prepared on the basis of affidavits filed by 512 women public representatives. The report includes women public representatives of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies/Union Territories.

This report states that criminal cases are registered against 28% of women MPs/MLAs. 15% have serious charges like murder and attempt to murder. 17 women leaders are billionaires. The total declared assets of all of them is Rs 10,417 crore.

This report came in April this year. It includes all the states and union territories of the country. The report has been prepared especially keeping in mind the 18th Lok Sabha and the current state assemblies. ADR and National Election Watch (NEW) have prepared this report with the aim of providing information to voters and promoting electoral transparency.

Highlights of the report

24 out of 75 women MPs of Lok Sabha, 10 out of 37 in Rajya Sabha and 109 out of 400 women MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Talking about serious criminal cases, 14 MPs in Lok Sabha, 7 MPs in Rajya Sabha and 57 out of 400 MLAs have declared serious charges like murder or attempt to murder.

Status of states

The ratio of criminal cases against women representatives in Telangana and Goa is the highest at 67%. This figure is 58% in Andhra Pradesh, 50% in Punjab and Kerala and 43% in Bihar. Serious allegations have been made against 42% women representatives of Telangana and 45% of TDP.

Situation based on political parties

Out of 217 women MPs/MLAs of BJP, 23% have criminal cases and 11% have serious criminal cases. Out of 83 women MPs/MLAs of Congress, 34% have criminal cases and 20% have serious charges. Out of 13 women MPs of Aam Aadmi Party, 69% have criminal cases and 31% have serious charges. Out of 20 women representatives of TDP, 65% have criminal cases registered against them.

Economic status of women representatives

The average assets of women representatives of Andhra Pradesh is Rs 74.22 crore, which is the highest. The average assets of women representatives of Assam, Mizoram and Manipur are the lowest (Rs 2,182.84 crore).
