Delhi: Rs 9 crore was defrauded in Delhi with the connivance of the employees of a bank, police revealed

Delhi: Another shocking fraud in the banking history of Delhi has been exposed. This time the story is not of any outside cyber thug, but of the ‘wolf’ sitting inside the bank. The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) has exposed a gang that defrauded ICICI Bank of Rs 9 crore, that too in a very planned manner, on the basis of fake documents and insider collusion.

The roots of this high-profile case start from the bank’s credit manager Anshul Ahuja, who is now behind the bars of the jail. Anshul was in collusion with Himanshu Rastogi, who is a professional chartered accountant, and Rishi Chhabra, who is a private DSA (Direct Sales Agent). The three together set up a network that used to get high loans to clients with low CIBIL scores, that too on the basis of fake documents.

Rich on paper, empty pockets in reality, how was the fraud done
The method of this gang was very clever. Rishi Chhabra would search for people in the market who wanted big loans but did not meet the bank’s criteria. Then Himanshu Rastogi would prepare fake GST returns, false bank statements and fabricated CA reports for those customers. All these papers would then be sent directly to his man Anshul Ahuja sitting inside the bank, who would pass the loan without much inquiry.

‘Commission chain’ of lakhs – No EMI, just cut the goods

As soon as the loan was passed, the amount would go to the client’s account but in reality a large part of it would go into the pockets of these three in the name of ‘commission’. No one cared about the EMI. In a few months, all these loans turned into NPA (Non Performing Asset).

EOW raids and arrests

EOW started investigation on the basis of complaint and detected fraud in 72 files. A case was registered under the registered FIR. Anshul has already been arrested. Rishi Chhabra and Himanshu Rastogi were arrested on May 9, although both have got anticipatory bail from the High Court.

Police is investigating further

The police is now investigating the role of other possible members of this gang and the bank employees associated with it. The question is also being raised whether such gangs are active in other banks of the country as well.
