Kanpur: The Turkish company Gulermak, which is involved in the construction of four underground stations of the Kanpur Metro project, has fled the city, leaving the payment of about Rs 80 crore of local contractors in limbo. The Turkish company Gulermak Sam India, which is involved in the construction of underground stations of the Kanpur Metro project, has left the city in a state of panic among the local contractors and the administration. The company is accused of keeping pending payments of about Rs 80 crore of 40 contractors. The contractors claim that the payment has not been made for the last ten months, and the company deliberately delayed the payment after nationwide protests over Turkey’s alleged role in the Indo-Pakistani war.
What is the whole matter?
According to the contractors, all the senior officials of Gulermak have fled the city. When contacted over the phone, the company officials gave vague and evasive answers. The matter was complained to the officials of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), but no concrete action was taken. After this, nine contractors filed a written complaint in the District Magistrate (DM) office and demanded immediate intervention.
The contractors shared details of their pending payments, which include Rs 3.70 crore to Metro Marble, Rs 1.20 crore to Radiant Services, Rs 1.70 crore to Shreyans Infratech, Rs 74.80 lakh to Ace Interior, Rs 39.80 lakh to MD Ehsan Painter, Rs 8.54 lakh to Vinod Gupta Enterprises, Rs 29.50 lakh to Nandan Prefab and Rs 21.50 lakh to Shri Balaji Enterprises. The contractors say the company repeatedly assured payment, but no action was taken.
UPMRC Joint General Manager (Public Relations) Panchanan Mishra said off the record that Gulermac had completed the construction of four stations of Kanpur Metro’s Corridor-1, and UPMRC has made full payment to the company for this. He clarified that these contractors are sub-contractors of Gulermac, and as per the contract, the metro has kept 5 per cent of the amount in reserve, which will be released after one year. If Gulermac fails to make the payment to the contractors, UPMRC will be bound to release this amount to the contractors.
Administration assures probe to contractors
The incident highlights financial irregularities and lapses in management in the Kanpur Metro project. The contractors have demanded immediate intervention of the district administration and action to recover their pending payments. The matter has triggered widespread discontent and resentment among local contractors and workers, who are fighting for their rights. The administration has assured to initiate a probe into the matter.
