Rafah: Once again, such a havoc has been wreaked on the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip that there is a scene of devastation everywhere. At least 31 people were killed and many others were injured while going to the aid center to get food. Eyewitnesses said that Israeli forces fired on the crowd about one kilometer (1,000 yards) from the aid site run by the Israel-backed organization. The army issued a brief statement saying that it was “not aware of the damage caused by the firing of the Israeli army inside the humanitarian aid distribution site.”
What did the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation say?
There has been a state of chaos while the ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’ was distributing aid supplies. Many eyewitnesses said that Israeli soldiers fired on the crowd near the aid distribution sites. According to local health officials, at least six people were killed and more than 50 were injured before Sunday. The foundation says private security guards guarding its sites did not fire on the crowd, while the Israeli army has admitted to firing warning shots.
The foundation had earlier said in a statement that 16 truckloads of aid were distributed on Sunday morning and “no incidents” occurred. The Gaza Health Ministry said 31 people were killed and 170 others were injured. Hours earlier, officials at a Red Cross-run hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at least 21 Palestinians were killed and 175 others injured on Sunday while on their way to receive aid supplies from an Israeli-backed organization in the Gaza Strip.
What did people on the spot say?
Eyewitnesses said thousands of people began heading to the distribution site several hours before dawn, but as they headed to the site, the Israeli army ordered them to disperse and come back later. Witnesses said that when the crowd reached about a kilometer (1,000 yards) away, the Israeli army started firing at about 3 am. Amr Abu Taiba, who was in the crowd, said, “Firing was coming from all sides from naval warships, tanks and drones.”
‘Saw Israeli army firing’
Eyewitness Ibrahim Abu Saud, 40, also said that the Israeli army opened fire on people moving towards the aid distribution center. Abu Saud said that he saw many people injured due to the firing, including a young man, who died on the spot. He said, “We could not help him.” Mohammed Abu Teimane, 33, said that he saw the Israeli army firing on people going towards the aid distribution center and that his cousin and another woman were killed in this firing.
