National Guards arrive in Los Angeles

About 300 National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles early Sunday morning on the orders of Trump, who accused Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democrats of failing to prevent recent protests targeting immigration agents.

The move marks the first time in decades that a state’s National Guard has been activated without a request from its governor. The deployment follows two days of protests that began in downtown Los Angeles on Friday and spread to Paramount, a heavily Latino city south of the city, and neighboring Compton on Saturday.

Tensions escalated after multiple raids
Tensions were high after multiple raids by immigration officials the previous day, as the number of arrests of immigrants in the city topped 100 in a week. A prominent union leader was arrested while protesting and charged with obstructing law enforcement.

Governor Gavin Newsom objects
The National Guard deployment was made over the objections of Governor Gavin Newsom, who accused Trump of a completely exaggerated response designed to create a spectacle of force. Recent protests have drawn hundreds of participants, but they are far smaller than other mass demonstrations, including the 2020 protests against police violence that prompted Newsom to request assistance from the National Guard.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the last time the National Guard was activated without the governor’s permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama. Trump said there will be very strong law and order.

Trump cited legal provision
Trump has framed the move as a necessary response to Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ failure to quickly stop the unrest. In a directive on Saturday, Trump cited a legal provision that allows him to deploy federal service members. When there is a threat of rebellion or revolt against the authority of the US government.

2,000 National Guard troops deployed
Trump said he has authorized the deployment of 2,000 members of the National Guard. While preparing to board Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey on Sunday, Trump said there are violent people in Los Angeles and they will not be able to escape. He said there will be very strong law and order.

Trump was asked if he plans to send US troops to Los Angeles. He said that we will keep troops everywhere. We will not let this happen to our country. We will not let our country fall apart the way it happened under Biden’s rule. Trump also said that California officials who get in the way of deportation could face charges.

Judge arrested

Last month, a Wisconsin judge was arrested on charges that she helped a man escape immigration officials. Trump said that if officials get in the way of law and order, then yes, they will be charged. Newsom called Trump on Friday night and they spoke for about 40 minutes, according to the governor’s office.

There was some confusion about the exact time of the Guard’s arrival. Shortly before midnight local time, Trump congratulated the National Guard for a job well done. But less than an hour later, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the troops had yet to arrive in the city. According to a social media post by the Department of Defense, the soldiers included members of the California Army National Guard’s 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to deploy active duty Marines if violence continued in the region.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said Trump’s order reflects a president moving this country rapidly toward authoritarianism and usurping the powers of Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a staunch Trump ally, backed the president’s move, doubling down on the California Democrat’s criticism of Republicans. Johnson said Gavin Newsom has shown an inability or unwillingness to do what is necessary, so the president intervened.
