Himachal Pradesh Cloud Burst: Two people were killed while around 20 people are feared to have been swept away due to cloudburst, flash floods and heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Two bodies were recovered from Manuni Khad in Kangra district, while around 15-20 workers living in a labour colony near the Indira Priyadarshini Hydroelectric Project site are feared to have been swept away due to rising water levels in Khaniyara Manuni Khad.
According to officials, the work on the project was halted due to rains and the workers were resting in temporary shelters near the construction site when floodwater from Manuni Khad and nearby drains rushed towards the labour colony and swept away the workers.
Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administration, gram panchayat and revenue department have reached the spot to conduct search and rescue operations. Officials said some local workers associated with the project are safe.
In a post on social media, Dharamshala’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sudhir Sharma said that about 20 labourers were swept away in the incident. At the same time, three people are missing after a flash flood due to cloudburst in Kullu district. Several houses, a school building, connecting roads and small bridges were damaged due to the flood.
Three incidents of cloudburst occurred in Jiva Nala and Rehla Bihal in Sainj of Kullu district and Shilagarh in Gadsa area. Officials said that three people trying to take out their belongings from their houses in Rehla Bihal were swept away in the flood and are missing.
Kullu Additional District Commissioner (ADC) Ashwini Kumar said that Manali and Banjar of the district also witnessed flash floods. The team is present on the spot and the search operation is on. The Manali-Chandigarh National Highway was partially damaged due to the overflowing of Beas river near Manali. However, vehicular movement continues.
Several videos of heavy floods at many places in Kullu have shown signs of devastation. In a video, a vehicle is seen floating in muddy water. Banjar MLA Surinder Shourie said, “It has been raining heavily since morning and I have received many calls that the rain has caused damage in Sainj, Tirthan and Gadsa. I have asked the administration to take immediate action as people are in trouble.” The water level of Beas and Sutlej rivers has risen. Apart from this, Lahaul and Spiti Police said that the road from Kaza to Samdoh has been blocked at many places due to landslides, falling debris and overflowing drains.
Heavy to very heavy rains lashed many parts of the state, with Palampur recording 145.5 mm rainfall since Tuesday evening, followed by Jogindernagar (113 mm), Nahan (99.8 mm), Baijnath (85 mm), Paonta Sahib (58.4 mm), Gohar (55 mm), Dharamsala (54.1 mm), Jattan Barrage (49.2 mm), Kangra (44.4 mm), Narkanda (41 mm), Jot (30 mm), Raipur Maidan (29.2 mm), Amb (25.6 mm) and Kasauli (22 mm). The weather department has warned of flood risk in parts of five districts – Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur – till Thursday evening.
