Jammu Kashmir: Jailed Baramulla MP and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) president Engineer Rashid is going to go on a hunger strike in jail. He has announced that he will go on a 24-hour hunger strike inside Tihar Jail to protest against the continued denial of democratic rights to Kashmiris. This hunger strike will be from 8:00 pm on Saturday, 28 June to 8:00 pm on Sunday, 29 June.
It is being said that this hunger strike is also an attempt to highlight the silence of national parties about hundreds of Kashmiris who are rotting in Tihar Jail and other jails under draconian laws like UAPA only for having political beliefs.
‘Hypocrisy of BJP and Congress must be exposed’
According to AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, Engineer Rashid conveyed his decision during a meeting with his family recently, in which he stressed that the hypocrisy of both BJP and Congress accusing each other of throttling democracy must be exposed.
What did MP Rashid tell his family?
Imprisoned MP Rashid told his family, “It is unfortunate that both the parties are leaving no stone unturned in accusing each other of violating freedom, liberty and fundamental rights during their respective regimes. Yet, when it comes to snatching away the constitutional, democratic and human rights of Kashmiris, both are complicit in it.” He further said, “While the BJP is highlighting the atrocities committed during the 1975 Emergency, it conveniently forgets how it has treated Kashmiris in the last 11 years. Legitimate political voices were jailed, dissent was suppressed and political belief was branded as a crime.”
Rashid also said, “The Congress and others, on the other hand, are accusing the Modi government of imposing an undeclared emergency, but remain silent about the hundreds of Kashmiris lodged in Tihar and other jails under draconian laws like the UAPA. The hunger strike aims to remind the people of India that despite debates on the past and present Emergency, the continuous and systematic violation of the rights of Kashmiris since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019 cannot and should not be forgotten.
