Election Commission: Posted Article 326 to give the message that the voter verification going on in Bihar is completely constitutional…the commission is talking about transparency.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India recently shared a picture of Article 326 of the Indian Constitution on its official X handle. The post has started a discussion in political circles, especially amid the ongoing Special Intensive Voter Revision (SIR) campaign in Bihar. Opposition parties like RJD, Congress and others have raised questions on this process. The opposition alleges that starting this process at the time of monsoon and floods in Bihar is impractical, and this may leave many eligible voters, especially the poor and illiterate people, out of the list.

What does Article 326 of the Constitution say?

Article 326 of the Indian Constitution guarantees elections on the basis of adult suffrage. According to this, every citizen of India, who is 18 years of age or above and normally resides in a constituency, is entitled to register as a voter. However, there are also some conditions, such as if a person is a non-resident, mentally unstable, or disqualified due to crime, corruption, or illegal actions, he will not get the right to vote. This article ensures that all eligible citizens get the right to vote fairly and equally.

Commission running SIR campaign in Bihar

Ahead of the 2025 assembly elections in Bihar, the Election Commission has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign, which will run from June 25 to July 26. The aim of this campaign is to make the voter list error-free and remove illegal or fake voters. Counting forms are being distributed to about 7.89 crore voters in Bihar, which have to be submitted along with valid documents.
