President Draupadi Murmu has nominated eminent lawyer Ujjwal Devrao Nikam, senior social worker and educationist from Kerala C. Sadanandan Master, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and eminent historian and educationist Meenakshi Jain to the upper house of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. This notification was issued by the Home Ministry yesterday on Saturday.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who is going to the upper house of Parliament, has been a senior diplomat and is an officer of the 1984 Indian Foreign Service (IFS). In his 35-year long career, Harsh Vardhan has worked in many important positions abroad including the capital New Delhi.
He was ambassador in America before being Foreign Secretary
He was India’s Ambassador to America (2019). Prior to this, he also served as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh and India’s Ambassador to Thailand. Apart from this, he has also worked in France (UNESCO); America (United Nations, New York); Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City); Israel and South Africa (Durban). Harsh Vardhan worked as Joint Secretary (Director General) in the Ministry of External Affairs, where he had responsibility for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives.
After working as Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla was appointed the 33rd Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs on 29 January 2020. He had a BA degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University and worked in the corporate and public sector in India before joining the Indian Foreign Service.
Nikam has fought many important cases including Kasab
The country’s renowned lawyer Ujjwal Nikam is also going to become an MP through Rajya Sabha. He is known for fighting the case against terrorist Ajmal Kasab. He contested the Lok Sabha elections last year on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket, but lost to Congress candidate Varsha Gaikwad in a very tough contest on the Mumbai North Central seat.
As a public prosecutor, Nikam successfully advocated for the death penalty for Ajmal Kasab, the only terrorist caught alive during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. After fighting this case, he was given Z+ security in 2009. In 2016, Nikam was awarded Padma Shri. This is the fourth highest civilian award of the country. Not only this, a film “Aadesh – Power of Law” was also made on his biography.
Nikam also fought Pramod Mahajan murder case
After making a special identity in the world of advocacy, he entered politics before the Lok Sabha elections last year. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and the party made him a candidate from Mumbai North Central seat. But he lost the election.
Ujjwal Nikam was born in Jalgaon, Maharashtra to barrister father Devrao Madhavrao Nikam and Vimladevi. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Science and then studied advocacy from SS Maniyar Law College, Jalgaon. Apart from the 26/11 terror attack, Nikam has also fought famous cases like the murder of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar, the murder of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan (who was shot dead by his own brother) and the Mumbai gang rape. He was also the public prosecutor in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case.
Meenakshi Jain has written a book on Ram-Ayodhya
Dr. Meenakshi Jain, who has been nominated for the Rajya Sabha, is a renowned historian of medieval and colonial India. She is a former Associate Professor of History at Gargi College, Delhi University, a former Fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and a former member of the Governing Council of the Indian Council of Historical Research. She is currently a Senior Fellow of the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
Her deeply researched book has been in constant discussion. Her popular books include Flight of Deities and Rebirth of Temples (2019), The Battle for Rama: Case of the temple at Ayodhya (2017), Sati: Evangelicals, Baptist Missionaries and the changing Colonial Discourse (2016), Rama and Ayodhya (2013), Parallel Pathways: Essays on HinduMuslim Relations (1707-1857) (2010). In the year 2020, Dr. Meenakshi Jain was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution.
C Sadanandan Master, who has been nominated for the Rajya Sabha, is also a renowned educationist. He is associated with Kerala. Sadanandan Master is a senior social worker and educationist from Kerala, known for his long-term contribution in the field of society and education.
