The Gujarat government on Sunday approved the construction of a two-lane parallel bridge after the bridge accident in the Mahisagar river and sanctioned Rs 212 crore for the work related to this project. On July 9, a part of a four-decade-old bridge collapsed in Vadodara district of Gujarat and several vehicles fell into the Mahisagar river.
The death toll in this accident rose to 20 on Friday. Officials said that even after four days, the search for a missing person is going on. The old bridge near Gambhira village was an important link between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra.
New bridge will be constructed
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday granted administrative approval to the Road and Building Department for the construction of a new bridge near Mujpur connecting Vadodara and Anand districts. An official release said that the government has set a target of building a new structure in 18 months and the tender process has been started for this.
Approval of Rs 212 crore
Superintending Engineer of Road and Housing Department NV Rathwa said that the two-lane approach road of Mujhpur will be converted into a four-lane road and its width will be increased to seven meters. Apart from this, the 4.2 km long section from the highway to the bridge will also be made four-lane. He said, the Chief Minister has given administrative approval of Rs 212 crore for all these works.
Accident in Mahisagar river
Meanwhile, officials said that the search for the missing person in Mahisagar river continued for the fifth day on Sunday. Rescue teams are conducting search operations with the help of rubber boats and other necessary equipment. He also said that the debris of some small vehicles has been taken out from the river.
