Russia is trying to once again give impetus to the RIC (Russia-India-China mechanism) i.e. the trio of Russia, India and China. China has supported Russia for this. This is a forum where the three countries discuss global issues together, but due to increased tension between India and China, the RIC meeting has not been held since 2021.
This trilateral meeting can happen once again. Russia has been repeatedly asking for this meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his desire to resume RIC talks last month. After this, statements have come from both India and China regarding RIC.
What did India say about RIC?
India on Thursday said about the Russia-India-China (RIC) mechanism that this matter will have to be resolved by the three countries. When Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about this, he said that no decision has been taken on this yet.
Jaiswal said, this is a mechanism where the three countries discuss global and regional issues of their respective interest. He said, as far as the organization of this special RIC meeting is concerned, it will be decided between the three countries and when the meeting takes place, it will be informed at the appropriate time. A source said, at present no consensus has been reached on any meeting of RIC. There is no discussion going on about its meeting.
China agreed for the meeting
While India has also said that no decision has ever been taken for this meeting. On the other hand, China is ready to take this cooperation forward. China on Thursday supported Russia’s initiative to resume the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral alliance. China said that this trilateral cooperation is not only in the interest of the three countries, but also for the security and stability of the region and the world.
Russia is trying to reactivate RIC
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said on Thursday that Moscow hopes that the RIC meeting will resume. They are discussing this issue with Beijing and India. Rudenko said, we are talking to both the countries. We want to make this forum effective again, because these three countries are not only the founders of BRICS, but are also important partners.
China has responded positively to this initiative of Russia. Reacting to Rudenko’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said cooperation between India, China and Russia serves the interests of the three countries and maintains peace, security, stability and progress in the region and the world.
Also, Lin said, China is ready to negotiate with Russia and India to advance trilateral cooperation.
Last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at an event organized by a think tank in Moscow that he hoped the RIC would be reactivated following signs of thaw in India-China relations. Lavrov had said, it [RIC] has met several times in the past few years. Our meetings were halted for some time, first due to the Covid pandemic and then due to escalation of tensions on the India-China border. However, now there is news that the situation is improving and we hope that the RIC will resume its work soon.
What is RIC?
The Russia-India-China Troika is a mechanism between the three major countries where the three discuss global issues. Its purpose is to promote cooperation and dialogue on regional and global issues.
The last meeting of the IIC was held in the year 2021. After this, there was a rift in the relations between India and China. Due to this, there has been no meeting of RIC since then. However, once again there are positive signals from India and China for the meeting to be held.
