Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday became the third Vice President to resign from the post mid-term. Earlier, VV Giri had resigned from the post of Vice President, who took over as the acting President after the death of then President Zakir Hussain on May 3, 1969.
VV Giri resigned from the post of Vice President on July 2, 1969 and contested the presidential election as an independent candidate. He was the first Vice President who could not complete his term.
He also resigned from the post of Vice President
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat resigned from the post of Vice President on 21 July 2007 after losing the presidential election against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pratibha Patil. After Shekhawat’s resignation, the post of Vice President remained vacant for 21 days, after which Mohammad Hamid Ansari was elected to the post.
Vice Presidents R Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma and KR Narayanan also resigned from their posts, but after being elected President. Krishna Kant was the only Vice President who died while in office. He breathed his last on 27 July 2002.
Cited health reasons
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post citing health reasons. In his resignation letter sent to President Draupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said that he is leaving the post with immediate effect to give priority to health care. Dhankhar said in a letter to the President that in order to give priority to health care and follow medical advice, I am resigning from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, in accordance with Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.
Dhankhar became Vice President in 2022
Jagdeep Dhankhar (74) took over as Vice President in August 2022 and his term was till 2027. The resignation of Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. He recently underwent angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi and was hospitalised for a few days in March this year. On some occasions, his condition did not look good, but he often appeared energetic in public events, including Parliament.
During his tenure as Rajya Sabha Chairman, Dhankhar had several clashes with the opposition, which also moved a motion to impeach him. The motion to remove him was later rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. This motion was the first case of removal of a sitting Vice President in independent India.
Resigned during tenure
He is the third Vice President of India to resign during tenure after VV Giri and R Venkataraman. Giri and Venkataraman resigned from the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election. According to the rules, it is necessary to hold elections for the post of Vice President within the next six months. However, the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha can conduct the proceedings of the House until the new Vice President is elected.
Congress raised questions on resignation
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X, the sudden resignation of the Vice President and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is incomprehensible. Ramesh said that Dhankhar had scheduled a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee at 1 pm on Tuesday. The Congress leader said that he (Dhankhar) also had to make some big announcements related to the judiciary. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar thanked President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers and all the MPs for their support during his tenure.
