Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday claimed that people from states like Bihar and West Bengal are involved in illegal occupation of forest, government and other lands. The state government is investigating those who have illegally occupied the land. He said that the details of these people are being shared with the local authorities. It is being verified whether they are actually residents from across the border.
There are many places in the state where the administration has carried out eviction action in the past. The Chief Minister has ordered to vacate government and forest land from illegal encroachers. Recently, some sporadic incidents of eviction took place in Dhubri and Goalpara.
The Chief Minister had announced that the eviction drive will continue despite widespread response. The city administration is preparing to evict the residents of Uriamghat in Golaghat. However, he visited Uriamghat on Friday afternoon and made an important comment on the eviction in the area.
Action will be taken against those who occupy land illegally
Sarma said that people from districts like Sribhumi, Dhubri, Cachar, Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon have illegally occupied the land, along with them there are people from Bengal and Bihar. The Chief Minister said that the names, addresses and other details of such people are being taken. It will be shared with the officials of the place from where they are claiming to come. If they are not local residents, action will be taken against them.
He clearly said that the government cannot remain a mute spectator in the event of illegal occupation. Action has to be taken in this matter and he wants the cooperation of the local people in this. He said that in the places where illegal occupation is taking place, incidents like drug abuse and theft are increasing.
Eviction drive carried out in more than 30 villages
The administration said that the eviction drive will be carried out on more than 3,000 bighas of land in more than 30 villages bordering the border. Accordingly, the occupiers were ordered to vacate the site before July. After receiving notices from the administration, many people living illegally in the area left the area in their vehicles along the main road from Uriamghat to Sarupathar.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected the border with the help of a special drone in the presence of Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan, District Commissioner Pulak Mohanta, Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh, Sarupathar Revenue Divisional Officer Manoj Dale and several administration officials. He said that the eviction drive will be postponed if the suspected citizens leave Uriamghat.
