Malta and Canada also gave a big blow to Israel by announcing recognition of Palestine as an independent nation; France and Britain have also made such an announcement.

United Nations: After France, now Canada and Malta have also taken a decision to shock Israel on Wednesday. Both these countries announced that they will recognize Palestine as an independent nation in September. This move is a new attempt to increase pressure to end the Israel-Palestine conflict that has been going on for nearly 80 years, along with France and the United Kingdom.

मार्क कार्नी, कनाडा के प्रधानमंत्री। Malta’s Foreign Ministry announced

Malta’s Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar had already made this announcement in the United Nations General Assembly meeting. Cutajar said that Malta has long been supporting the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people and as countries playing a responsible role, it is our duty to bring the concept of two-state solution from theory to practice. He said, “For this reason, the Government of Malta has taken this in-principle decision that it will formally recognize Palestine in the United Nations General Assembly in September.”

Big announcement by Canadian PM Carney

Canada’s PM Carney said that his country will make this announcement in the annual meeting of world leaders. The meeting will begin on September 23.

He said the recognition is based on the condition that the Palestinian Authority will hold general elections in 2026, in which Hamas will have no role and the Palestinian state will be de-militarized. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas mentioned these promises in a letter dated June 10, but it is not clear what Carney wants beyond that.

Malta wants ‘lasting peace in the Middle East’

Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela first announced his country’s decision on Facebook. He said the decision is part of efforts to bring lasting peace to the Middle East. This Mediterranean island country and member of the European Union will now join more than 145 countries, including dozens of European countries, who have already recognized Palestine as a state.

France and Britain have also made announcements on Palestine

French President Emmanuel Macron had announced before this week’s meeting that his country would also recognize Palestine at the upcoming annual meeting of the 193-member United Nations General Assembly. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that Britain would recognize Palestine before the September meeting, but could withdraw from it if Israel agrees to a ceasefire and a long-term peace process in the next eight weeks.

Israel opposed

Israel said it opposes the two-state solution and is boycotting the meeting along with the US. Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon on Tuesday strongly criticized the 125 countries participating in the conference and the new announcements to recognize Palestine. Danon said, “Some people in the world fight terrorists and extremists, while others ignore them or resort to appeasement.” “While our hostages are held in Hamas terror tunnels in Gaza, these countries are issuing empty statements rather than making efforts to secure their release. This is hypocrisy and a waste of time that legitimises terrorism and squanders any prospects for regional progress.” (AP)
