Know why earthquakes occur?
Earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates and other geological processes beneath the Earth’s surface. The Earth’s outer layer (lithosphere) is divided into several huge tectonic plates, which float on molten magma (mantle). These plates move slowly (a few centimeters per year).
When these plates collide with each other, move apart or slide under each other, this causes stress. When this stress is suddenly released, energy is released in the form of seismic waves, called earthquakes.
