Dwarka Expressway: In a major boost to Delhiites on Sunday, PM Modi will inaugurate two major national highway projects worth around Rs 11,000 crore in Rohini today, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the National Capital Region, Delhi. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, these projects are – the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) project, a landmark scheme for Delhi to decongest the city.
The PM will launch these projects at Rohini at around 12:30 pm and will also inspect both the projects. “These initiatives reflect Prime Minister Modi’s vision of building world-class infrastructure that makes life easier and ensures seamless mobility,” the PMO said in a statement on Saturday.
Know what these plans are
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the 76-km-long Urban Extension Route-II (UER-II), which is designed as Delhi’s third ring road and has an estimated cost of ₹6,445 crore.
The PM will also inaugurate the 29-km-long Dwarka Expressway, including its Delhi section and tunnel route to Indira Gandhi International Airport.
These projects are expected to reduce travel time from Noida to IGI airport and ease congestion on Delhi’s ring road, NH-48, NH-44 and Barapullah elevated corridor.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), PM Modi will flag off four of the five packages of UER-II, which will connect Mahipalpur near IGI airport to Alipur in north Delhi.
Meanwhile, the third and fourth phases of the Dwarka Expressway will also be unveiled, including a 5.1-km-long tunnel connecting the road directly to the IGI airport.
“Both these roads will significantly reduce congestion in and around Delhi and NCR,” a senior NHAI official said.
Highlights of UER-II project
Length: 75.71 km (54.21 km in Delhi, 21.50 km in Haryana).
Cost: ₹6,445 crore.
Packages: Five in total; four are being inaugurated today.
Benefits
This new highway project will facilitate easy access to and from Gurugram, western and southern Delhi bypassing NH-44, Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Dhaula Kuan and the city’s ring road.
Built using nearly 10 lakh metric tonnes of inert material obtained from bio-mining of old waste from landfills in Delhi, the project is a major step towards sustainability.
UER-II, starting near Akshardham Temple, will connect to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, providing faster routes from Haryana and Rajasthan towards Dehradun.
A new 65-km-long highway from Tronica City to the under-construction FNG Expressway has also been approved. In future, this corridor will connect five major expressways of NCR: Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad and Yamuna Expressway.
Features of Dwarka Expressway
Delhi section: 10.1 km, including a tunnel leading to IGI airport.
Haryana section: 29 km between Mahipalpur and Kherki Daula on NH-48, inaugurated in March 2024.
The Dwarka Expressway, which is 29 km long in total, has been developed in two parts in Delhi and Haryana. The 10.1 km long Delhi section includes a 5.1 km long tunnel that connects this corridor directly to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, providing faster and easier access to the airport.
The 29 km long Haryana section between Mahipalpur and Kherki Daula on National Highway-48 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in March 2024.
Once fully operational, the expressway is expected to decongest the busy Delhi-Gurugram route and significantly improve connectivity for commuters in West Delhi and surrounding NCR.
