Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave next week on a four-day visit to Japan and China on August 29, 2025, where he will mainly attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for a four-day visit to Japan and China on Friday (August 29, 2025) next week. The Ministry of External Affairs announced Prime Minister Modi’s proposed foreign visit on Friday (August 22, 2025). PM Modi will be on a two-day visit to Japan in the first leg of his foreign visit. After this, the Prime Minister will visit China, where he will mainly participate in the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Modi will visit Japan for the eighth time as Prime Minister

The announcement of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to both the Asian countries has come just days after the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India. Announcing PM Modi’s visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that Modi will be in Japan on August 29 and 30 to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit (India-Japan Annual Summit 2025). This will be Modi’s eighth visit to Japan as Prime Minister.

Strategic partnership will be reviewed and global issues will be discussed- Ministry of External Affairs

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba will review the special strategic and global partnership between India and Japan. Apart from this, Modi and Ishiba will discuss cooperation in the areas of defense and security, trade and economy, technology and innovation and people-to-people exchange. Along with this, issues of regional and global importance will also be discussed between the two Prime Ministers.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, “This visit will further reinforce the long-term special bond of friendship between the two countries.”

PM Modi will hold bilateral meetings with several leaders in China

In the second phase of his visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China from August 31 to September 1 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. He will attend the SCO summit to be held in the Chinese city of Tianjin on August 31 and September 1.

The Ministry of External Affairs said, “Apart from the summit, Prime Minister Modi is likely to hold bilateral meetings with several Chinese leaders.”
