Washington: The US has issued an official notification to impose an additional 25% tariff on India. US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports from August 27. Half of the 50% duties imposed by Trump on Indian imports came into effect earlier this month and the remaining half is scheduled to come into effect from Wednesday. The notification states that the tariff hike will come into effect on or after 12:01 am on August 27, 2025.

This was the reason given for imposing additional tariff on India

Trump had cited India’s purchase of Russian oil as the reason for doubling the tariff. He had said in an order, “I believe that India, which directly or indirectly imports oil from Russia. Due to this, Russia is getting funds which are being used in the Ukraine war. America says that additional tariffs have been imposed on India only to put pressure on Russia. He also said that India is fueling the Ukraine war by buying oil from Russia.

America will improve relations with China

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Monday praised his relations with China. He said that America is going to build better relations with China. He said that our relationship with China will be excellent. They have some stakes. We have incredible stakes, but I do not want to play those stakes. If I play those stakes, they will ruin China. Trump said, “I will not play these cards. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was sitting next to the US President when he made this remark from the Oval Office of the White House.

India had retaliated against America

India had strongly opposed the imposition of 50 percent tariff. India had said that European countries do more business with China than India. At the same time, India had recently said that America also buys some things from Russia. India had said that despite China being the biggest buyer of Russian oil, America has not taken any such step against it. Trump has recently extended the tariff deadline for China, which was earlier to end in August. The US had imposed a 20% duty on China in fentanyl-related duties, and the base rate is 10%, which makes the total duty on Chinese imports 30%.
